Club Distance Calculator (Yards)

This is a calculator to provide guidance on how far you will hit different clubs. To start, choose one of your middle distance clubs such as a 5 iron.

For this club, select your club type, the number of the club, and the distance the club carries in yards.

How the club distance calculator works

Enter how far one club carries and Golf Mentor's free calculator estimates the carry distance of every club in your bag, from driver to lob wedge, plus your club head speed, in yards or metres. No signup is needed.

From the loft and carry of your club, the calculator works out your club head speed, then scales a reference set of carry distances to that speed. Your table can then drive club recommendations in the Golf Mentor GPS rangefinder on the course.

Example

A golfer whose 7-iron carries 150 yards has an estimated club head speed of 101 m.p.h, and these estimated carry distances:

Club Loft Carry (yards)
Driver 10° 246
3-wood 14° 230
3-hybrid 22° 203
4-hybrid 26° 191
5-iron 30° 171
6-iron 34° 161
7-iron 38° 150
8-iron 42° 139
9-iron 46° 123
Pitching wedge 50° 113
Gap wedge 53° 102
Sand wedge 56° 86
Lob wedge 60° 75

Frequently asked questions

How does the club distance calculator work?

You enter how far one club carries, ideally a mid iron such as a 5 or 7 iron. The calculator uses that club's loft and carry to estimate your club head speed, then scales a reference set of carry distances to your speed to give a distance for all 13 clubs in a typical bag, from driver to lob wedge.

Is it carry distance or total distance?

Carry distance: how far the ball flies before it first lands. Carry is what matters for approach shots, because it tells you which club gets the ball over a bunker or onto the green. Total distance adds the roll after landing, which depends heavily on the ground and conditions.

How accurate are the estimates?

They follow the typical gaps between clubs for a golfer with your swing speed, so they are a good starting point rather than a measurement. Strike quality, ball, weather and altitude all change real distances. Once you know the true carry of another club you can edit it in your table.

Can I use yards or metres?

Yes. Use the Yards / Metres switch above the calculator and every distance and speed is shown in the units you choose.

Is it free?

Yes. The calculator is free and needs no signup. Your table can also power club recommendations in the Golf Mentor GPS rangefinder app on the course.
